The NISAR (NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) satellite, a collaboration between the US and Indian space agencies, has begun releasing its first public data. Since July 20, researchers can access information collected by its two powerful radar instruments, operating in L-band and S-band. This milestone marks the beginning of continuous releases of processed data, enabling the scientific community to track Earth's surface movement with unprecedented precision, including glacier dynamics and crustal deformation.

Among NISAR's initial revelations is an image of Antarctica that scientists have dubbed the "hummingbird." This name comes from the distinctive shape of the radar signal as it penetrates the ice, providing a detailed view of the complex subglacial topography and ice flow dynamics. NISAR's ability to penetrate the ice sheet and observe subtle surface changes is crucial for better understanding the contribution of polar ice caps to sea level rise and the effects of climate change in these critical regions.

NISAR's L-band and S-band radars offer complementary capabilities. The L-band is particularly effective for measuring changes in vegetation and soil moisture, while the S-band is ideal for monitoring land surface deformation, such as that caused by earthquakes or volcanic activity, and glacier movement. The combination of both bands provides a comprehensive, high-resolution view of Earth's processes, which will facilitate more precise studies on ecosystem evolution, geological hazards, and the global water cycle.
