Faintest planet ever imaged from Earth discovered

A team of astronomers has discovered a third planet orbiting the star Beta Pictoris, named Beta Pictoris d. This new exoplanet is one hundred times fainter than Beta Pictoris b, the first planet detected in the same system, and is among the lightest exoplanets ever directly imaged from ground-based observatories. The discovery was made using the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT). Most notably, after its initial identification with the VLT, the research team found that Beta Pictoris d had been hiding in archived observations spanning more than a decade.
