Researchers have proposed a new design for fault-tolerant quantum computation (FTQC) called the Hierarchical Logical Processor (HLP). This approach aims to overcome the limitations of quantum low-density parity-check (qLDPC) codes, which, despite their encoding efficiency, require frequent non-local couplings, introducing errors and complexity. The HLP combines a high-rate quantum CSS code with the rotated surface code (RSC), achieving higher encoding efficiency than the standard RSC and drastically reducing the frequency of non-local couplings to just once every Θ(d₀) rounds of level-0 error correction, where d₀ is the base-code distance.
