MoTIvE: New Framework for Node Ranking in Temporal Networks

A new study introduces MoTIvE (Motif-based Temporal network node ranking), an innovative framework for classifying nodes in temporal networks. Unlike traditional methods that treat networks as static or aggregate temporal information, MoTIvE focuses on the dynamic structure of interactions. This approach allows for the identification of node importance based on sequential interaction patterns, known as temporal motifs, which capture the evolution of relationships over time.…

Topology emerging from disorder in quantum systems

A recent study has demonstrated how topological properties can robustly emerge in disordered quantum systems, a finding that challenges conventional intuition. Traditionally, topology in condensed matter physics is associated with perfect crystalline materials and ordered quantum states. However, this research reveals that even in the presence of significant disorder, such as impurities or defects, a system can manifest distinct topological characteristics, opening new avenues for designing materials with exotic quantum properties.

The concept of topology in physics refers to properties of a system that are invariant under continuous deformations, meaning they do not change unless the system is fundamentally broken. In topological insulators, for example, this translates into resistance-free electron conduction at the material's edges, while its bulk remains insulating. The novelty of this work lies in demonstrating that disorder, far from destroying these properties, can even be a key factor in their appearance and stability, a phenomenon that has been theoretically predicted but rarely conclusively observed in realistic systems.
