Hubble and Webb reveal a scarcity of small Trans-Neptunian Objects

For the first time, NASA's Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes have collaborated to study Trans-Neptunian Objects (TNOs) in the outer reaches of our solar system. This joint research has allowed the observation of some of the smallest and faintest TNOs detected to date. The most significant and unexpected finding is a lower abundance of small TNOs than current models predicted, suggesting a different formation history for these celestial bodies.

TNOs are remnants from the solar system's formation, and their size distribution is crucial for understanding planetary accretion processes. The observed scarcity of small TNOs by Hubble and Webb contrasts with predictions that expected a much larger population of these objects, formed from collisions and fragmentation. This result implies that planetesimal formation in the outer solar system might have been more efficient than previously thought, or that erosion and destruction processes have been less intense.
