Plasmon-assisted superconductivity in LiTi2O4

Researchers have discovered a new mechanism that enhances superconductivity in lithium titanium oxide (LiTi2O4), a material already known for its superconducting properties. The study reveals that collective electron excitations, known as plasmons, can mediate the interaction between electrons, thereby strengthening the superconducting state. This finding is significant because most conventional superconductors rely on lattice vibrations (phonons) for this interaction, whereas in LiTi2O4, plasmons appear to play a crucial role.

LiTi2O4 is the only titanium oxide that exhibits superconductivity, with a critical temperature (Tc) of approximately 13 K. Although this temperature is relatively low compared to high-temperature superconductors, the possibility of plasmons acting as mediators opens new avenues for designing materials with higher Tc. This electron-plasmon coupling mechanism could be fundamental to understanding and developing unconventional superconductors, offering an alternative to the traditional electron-phonon interaction.
