NASA has selected 12 new investigations aimed at supporting human explorers in space. Of these, six will focus on advancing the ability to produce food off-planet, while the other six aim to enhance the understanding of how the unique conditions associated with space exploration can impact the health and physiology of astronauts. This initiative is crucial for long-duration missions, where self-sufficiency and crew protection are paramount.

The six food-focused investigations, supported by the agency's Space Biology program, seek to develop more efficient and sustainable systems for growing food in space environments. This includes studying new crop varieties, cultivation methods optimized for microgravity and limited resources, and evaluating their nutritional value and impact on astronaut diets. The ability to grow fresh, nutritious food in situ would significantly reduce reliance on Earth-based supplies and improve the quality of life for crews.

On the other hand, the six health-focused investigations will address the physiological challenges astronauts face, such as bone and muscle loss, radiation effects, cardiovascular changes, and psychological impacts. These studies are fundamental for developing effective countermeasures and medical protocols to ensure the safety and well-being of astronauts during extended missions to destinations like the Moon or Mars. A deep understanding of these effects is essential to mitigate risks and ensure the success of future expeditions.
