Engineers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Southern California are testing a new space sensor designed to measure the rate of Arctic sea ice disappearance. This instrument, slated for launch in about a year, is part of a broader initiative to monitor critical changes in Earth's polar regions.

Although the sensor's launch is still pending, scientists have already begun preparations for its use. A two-week field campaign was recently conducted in the Canadian wilderness. These campaigns are crucial for calibrating and validating the data the sensor will collect once operational in space, ensuring the accuracy of future measurements of sea ice thickness and extent.
