Scientists have achieved the first observation of the optical topological Hall effect in a material, specifically in a Mott insulator that hosts skyrmions. This phenomenon, analogous to the electrical topological Hall effect but induced by light, opens new avenues for manipulating topological states using electromagnetic fields. The detection was performed in the material GaV4S8, a compound that at low temperatures and in the presence of magnetic fields forms skyrmions, spin structures with non-trivial topology.
