The International Space Station (ISS) hosts hundreds of scientific experiments simultaneously. Given the limited crew time, many of these experiments require advanced automation to maximize productivity. In this context, fully automated devices, such as Redwire’s Advanced Space Experiment Processors (ADSEPs), have been developed to conduct a greater amount of space science with less astronaut intervention.
These autonomous mini-laboratories allow for the execution of experiments that would otherwise consume valuable crew work hours, freeing up astronauts for other critical tasks or for experiments requiring more direct human interaction. The ability to automate complex processes is crucial for maintaining the pace of scientific research in a restrictive environment like space, where every minute of crew time is a scarce and valuable resource.
