Researchers have developed a unified theoretical framework to understand non-Hermitian localization, a key phenomenon in open quantum systems. This new approach allows for a coherent description of the transition between different types of localization, such as bulk, surface, and boundary-condition-dependent localization. The novelty lies in the introduction of boundary-insensitive modes, which persist even in the presence of perturbations at the system's edges, and in establishing an analogy between non-Hermitian localization phenomena and electromagnetism.
